Vanguard Street Sweep

In 1966, youth from the Tenderloin neighborhood of San Francisco, urban ministers, anti-poverty activists, and homophile activists helped organize Vanguard, the earliest known queer youth organization in the United States. In June of 1966, Vanguard coordinated a “street sweep” event, to demonstrate commitment to their community and protest ongoing police harassment.

The photograph below was taken at the Street Sweep action by an unknown member of Vanguard in 1966.
