Penalties for Sex Offenses in the U.S., 1964

As part of their activism, the Mattachine Society, an early gay rights organization in the United States founded in 1950, attempted to spread awareness to both the public and to LGBTQ+ individuals about the ways in which same sex activities were criminalized in the United States. Mattachine Society members created and distributed a table, excerpted below, which identified the penalties for particular behaviors and activities. Note on language: terms related to sexual activity are referenced in this document, such as sodomy (sexual activity involving anal intercourse), adultery (sexual intercourse between married people) and fornication (sexual intercourse between unmarried people).
