Chart of the Voyages of the Slave Ship Brookes

This chart shows detailed information about the voyage of the Brookes, a British slave ship documented by the abolitionist Thomas Clarkson as part of the evidence he presented to Parliament in 1788 in an effort to demonstrate the horrors that continued to characterize the Atlantic slave trade. Despite the passage earlier that year of the Regulated Slave Trade Act, which stipulated better conditions for slave-carrying vessels, the data shows that the Brookes contained human cargo far in excess of the mandated amount, resulting in the deaths of 19 slaves during the 49-day "middle passage" from Africa to Kingston, Jamaica.
